  • Description
A sparkling new novel of love and historical romance based on this famous Exmoor beauty spot. Set in the period between 1799 and 1805 during the Napoleonic wars, the story follows events centred on smuggling and spying, both activities being rife in North Devon at that time. The story interweaves the heroine’s love affair with a wealthy French aristocratic spy, and the recurrent legend of a huge and mysterious hound which haunts the mist-laden hills of Exmoor. Whilst the heroine comes to realise that the spy has merely been making use of her for his own ends, the villagers gradually forget their moral disapproval as she wins their acceptance, but only through the tragic death of her son. While there are some delightful touches of comedy in the characters of the butler, Lafitte, the unctuous curate Mr Tremayne, and the saturnine Revenue Officer Finch, the central narrative will keep the reader enthralled. The author bring local colour and places into play at every opportunity, linking known legends and historical facts into her narrative. The book will thus be of great interest to locals and visitors alike. ISBN 1841143898, hardback, 232x154mm, 176 pages.
