The Forest of Bowland & Pendle Hill
The Forest of Bowland & Pendle Hill
  • Description

The Forest of Bowland is often by-passed by travellers heading north for the Lakes and Scotland on the M6. However there is much to discover as shown in this fascinating photographic guide by Andy Stansfield.

Situated mostly in Lancashire except for its north-east corner which lies in Yorkshire, the Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) covers 213 square miles. It consists of a core of wild moorland with a fringe of farmland and is drained by the rivers Ribble, Hodder, Wyre and Lune.

Today, in addition to being of national and international importance for its wildlife, the Forest of Bowland is a major recreational resource for the towns north of Manchester. The single most popular resource, Beacon Fell Country Park (which includes Bowland Visitor Centre), attracts 260,000 visitors each year. Pendle Hill provides a more focused destination than Bowland, largely for ramblers and those wishing to tour the villages of the famous Pendle Witch Country. Author and photographer, Andy Stansfield, was born in Manchester in 1951 and has lived in Lancashire and walked the Bowland hills for the last quarter of a century. He has worked as a freelance photojournalist, copywriter, and deputy editor for one of the UKs largest leisure organisations, and he has edited several publications. Andy currently earns his living through travel photography and writing magazine features.
