The Book of Exmouth
The Book of Exmouth
  • Description

This book chronicles the long journey of Exmouth from small settlement to resort town.

From the first little community of fisherfolk at the time of the Norman Conquest (then known as Exanmutha), and its growth inland towards the two villages of Littleham Rural and Withycombe Raleigh, taking in the Bretons who had settled on the Point at Lydnicnaesse as well as folk from Wessex, the enlarged community of Exmouth steadily increased in size.

Further growth over the centuries continued, and was compounded at the beginning of the 1700s when a learned judge discovered a great improvement in his health after staying in Exmouth. The town's identity as a resort was born.

ISBN 1841142050, 297x210mm, 160 page hardback, and over 150 historic photographs, maps and illustrations. Reprinted September 2006.
