The parish of Loddiswell lies at the heart of the South Hams, deep in rich farmlands, amidst rolling hills and gentle valleys. In prehistoric times the hill fort of the Blackdown Rings gave panoramic views across vast distances, from the sea to the distant slopes of Dartmoor, and tiny settlements were made in forest clearings. Hamlets, farmsteads and villages later grew, linked by trackways wending their mazy way around the endless ribbon of field boundaries that even today form the pattern of the parish landscape.
In more recent times the area has seen the coming and going of great social changes; the arrival of the railway and the expansion wrought by the Industrial Revolution. Loddiswell has also been caught up in the tide of important national events.
All this, and much more, is detailed in this 176 page book, copiously illustrated throughout with over 200 historic photographs of the places and people who have made up the thriving community of Loddiswell and its surrounding parish. ISBN 1841140309, hardback, 297x210mm, 176 pages.
