As one of the rarest of the British native
breeds, the Dales pony has a history
intertwined with that of its near neighbour
and close relative the Fell pony.
A native of the eastern Pennines, the Dales
has always been a strong, hardy and stylish
pony, suitable for all the family.
Originally developed as pack pony of great
strength to transport lead from the high
moors to the ports of the North East coast
its value has always been recognised in its
home ground.
Notable for its wonderful action and ability
to turn a ‘hoof ’ to anything it is at last
enjoying a well deserved resurgence in
popularity throughout this country and
abroad. Today all these qualities make the
Dales pony the perfect package, and with
over sixty fascinating and heart-warming
images, Spirit of the Dales Pony captures
the essence of these beautiful creatures.
Jackie Snowdon has had a lifelong
obsession with horses and ponies.
From a family that had been breeders
of Shire Horses in the early twentieth
century she was inspired to an interest
in British Native ponies, particularly the
rare Dales pony. Jackie has now been
actively involved, owning, breeding and
showing Dales ponies for over 25 years.
