The Spirit of the Dorset Coast
The Spirit of the Dorset Coast
  • Description
  • Related

The Dorset coast is internationally famous for its scenery. No other county in southern England can boast such a variety of landscape, all within a distance of some seventy miles. It encompasses sandy beaches, towering chalk and limestone cliffs, caves, coves and bays, and the unique Chesil Beach. Here too are the attractive havens of Lyme Regis,Weymouth, Christchurch and, of course, Poole, the second largest natural harbour in the world. In stark contrast is the bleak and windswept but characterful Isle of Portland – ‘The Gibraltar of Wessex’,Thomas Hardy named it.

Due to its exceptional geology much of the Dorset coast is now being considered as a World Heritage Site, an honour which it would share with places such as the Grand Canyon.

In this exceptional collection of over 60 colour pictures renowned photographer Roger Holman explores this wonderful coastline, its hinterland and landmarks, to present a rounded portrait of a national treasure.

Acclaimed photographer Roger Holman was born in 1932 near Wimborne, not far from where he lives today, and educated at the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School. On leaving he joined the family firm, which he continued to run – apart from time spent in the RAF on National Service – until he recently handed it over to two of his sons. He discovered photography in his teens and, having a great love of the countryside, finds landscape photography the most rewarding.
