The Book of Shaldon (pdf e-book)
The Book of Shaldon (pdf e-book)
  • Description

The village of Shaldon lies in the shadow of the Ness, a distinctive promontory at the mouth of the River Teign. While its history is bound with Teignmouth, on the opposite shore, Shaldon has a fascinating past all its own, and its inhabitants maintain a fierce sense of independence from their larger neighbour.

The Book of Shaldon provides the reader with a copiously illustrated history of the village, including many photographs never before published. It tells the story of the development of the village from the original river settlement upstream in Ringmore and of how Shaldon itself is built on reclaimed land, with a retaining wall, built around 1800, to hold the waters of the river in check.

The Shaldon regatta is one of the oldest in England dating back to at least 1817, if not before. The modern regatta runs for 9 days each August.
