John Willmott School
John Willmott School
  • Description

In the mid 1950s Sutton Coldfield was in need of a third grammar school. Originally called Sutton Coldfield County Grammar School, John Willmott Grammar School was founded in 1958. Named after one of the town’s Aldermen, the School quickly established itself under the Headmastership of Mr W. Roberts.

Five more Headteachers have served the School, and the envisaged pupil number of 540 has more than doubled. Five major building programmes have extended the School without destroying the original design. The School has been at the forefront of some of the major educational innovations of the past 50 years.

John Willmott School has produced some outstanding pupils in many different fields, including the worlds of journalism, sport, broadcasting, business and music.

Tony Daniels, former Assistant Headteacher at the School, describes the highs and the lows, the celebrations and the battles, as the School moved from grammar school to comprehensive school to specialist school status. Individual teachers, staff and pupils are affectionately remembered, but, above all, the unique ethos that has always been ‘Willmott’ is revealed.

Tony Daniels was born in 1946. Educated at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Faversham, he trained as a teacher at the College of S. Mark and S. John, Chelsea. He moved from theTrevelyan School, Windsor to John Willmott Grammar School in January 1972 and remained there until he retired in July 2005. Married with three children, he moved to Dorset in 2005 to pursue his study of the life and works of Hardy, a lifelong interest.
