The City of Manchester once a prime example of industrial Britain has been transformed into one of the major European cities of today. Constantly changing, the pace of redevelopment took on even greater impetus following the horrifying terrorist atrocity in 1996 and today shows no sign of abating. Glass clad office blocks and hotels now tower over sites once dominated by the infamous ‘dark satanic mills’ while fashionable shops and department stores interspersed with street cafes emerge from the prime sites in the commercial heart of the city.

In this departure from his renowned railway photography, having completed nine titles for Halsgrove, Mike Heath has directed his tripod mounted camera towards nocturnal Manchester and produced this stunning collection of images. They depict the shiny new structures and their cutting edge architecture, rejuvenated buildings from a bygone era and numerous events that combined have created one of England’s great cities. They are all seen from a fascinating nocturnal perspective which shows how the teeming city lives and breathes in the hours of darkness.

For nearly thirty years Mike Heath has been combining his hobbies photography and visiting preserved railways all over Britain, amassing vast collection of stunning images which have formed the basis for nine railway titles he has produced for the Halsgrove Railway series. Having developed an expertise night-time photography Mike has chosen to broaden his subject range venturing, with camera, into the centre of Manchester, to capture the buildings, street scenes and events of this vibrant city after dark.
