The City of Manchester once a prime example
of industrial Britain has been transformed into
one of the major European cities of today.
Constantly changing, the pace of redevelopment
took on even greater impetus following the
horrifying terrorist atrocity in 1996 and today
shows no sign of abating. Glass clad office blocks
and hotels now tower over sites once dominated
by the infamous ‘dark satanic mills’ while fashionable
shops and department stores interspersed
with street cafes emerge from the prime sites in
the commercial heart of the city.
In this departure from his renowned railway
photography, having completed nine titles for
Halsgrove, Mike Heath has directed his tripod mounted
camera towards nocturnal Manchester
and produced this stunning collection of images.
They depict the shiny new structures and their
cutting edge architecture, rejuvenated buildings
from a bygone era and numerous events that
combined have created one of England’s great

For nearly thirty years Mike Heath
has been combining his hobbies
photography and visiting preserved
railways all over Britain, amassing
vast collection of stunning images
which have formed the basis for
nine railway titles he has produced
for the Halsgrove Railway series.
Having developed an expertise
night-time photography Mike has
chosen to broaden his subject range
venturing, with camera, into the centre
of Manchester, to capture the
buildings, street scenes and events
of this vibrant city after dark.
