Portrait of the Cairngorms
Portrait of the Cairngorms
  • Description

The Cairngorms National Park is a vividly diverse landscape. At its heart is a rugged wilderness of high mountain plateaux. Deep glens cut into this sub-Arctic tundra by extinct carving glaciers, are now among the last places on earth where ancient Caledonian pine forests still flourish, while further down in the Straths, lovely villages straddle the gushing rivers.

The National Park stretches from the towns of Speyside – Grantown-on-Spey, Carrbridge, Aviemore, Kingussie, and Newtonmore – to the broad heads of the Angus glens. From Ballater in the east to the Drumochter pass in the west and beyond, this is one of the few remaining regions of Britain that can still be called ‘wilderness’ without too much of a stretch of the imagination.

This book of glorious colour photographs focuses on the stunning beauty and magnificence of the Cairngorms. Here you’ll find images of big skies spread above the Cairngorm plateau alongside those of dark, lowering clouds scudding across the highest tops; images of soaring heights are contrasted with gentle glens and their quiet settlements. The Cairngorms are infinitely varied, and are revealed in all their glory in this superb collection of over 140 images from master photographer Graham Uney.

Graham Uney has spent a lifetime exploring all corners of Britain, as well as further afield. His photographic and writing work has appeared in countless magazines and newspapers, as well as books. Aside from working as a writer and photographer, Graham also works as a Senior Guide forWilderness Scotland, covering the Cairngorms in all seasons as well as many other parts of the country.
