The Exmoor pony is one of the most beloved of all native breeds. Small and exceptionally hardy, it is also
one of the most ancient. Yet its numbers in the past have been severely threatened, making it rarer even
than the Giant panda. Today it remains a potent symbol of Exmoor, the herds roaming free over the commons
being one of the characteristic sights of the moor.
Renowned photographers Lisa and Shanan Leigh have captured these fascinating animals at all times and
seasons, from the annual gathering, through the sometimes harsh winters, to foaling in the summer, to show
the Exmoor pony at its true and spirited best.
Lisa and Shanan Leigh share twin obsessions – for horses and for capturing the perfect photographic
image. They moved to the edge of Exmoor, in Devon, in April 2004 and in 2005 launched their extremely
successful portrait and event photography business Total Leigh. Their phenomenal first book, Portrait of
Westcountry Point-to- Point, was published by Halsgrove in 2007.
