Portsmouth - The Old Town
Portsmouth - The Old Town
  • Description

From small prehistoric beginnings along the shores of todayís Camber, the story of Old Portsmouth as a settled community commences in the last years of the twelfth century, coinciding perhaps with the building of the church of St Thomas around 1185. Its heyday, however, coincided with the glories of Englandís Naval power when its narrow streets and characterful buildings echoed to the cries of sailors and the commerce they brought with them. Although huge damage was done in the Second World War, much remains at the heart of todayís great city of Portsmouth to remind us of its rich past.

Peter Rogers celebrates the life and essence of the OldTown with a remarkable collection of illustrations, supported by an evocative text, that conjour up its personalities and their surroundings through the centuries.

Peter Rogers was brought up in Portsmouth between theWars, listening to tales of the Old Town from his grandfather. This is his second book for Halsgrove, following The Book of Havant.
