A Portrait of Windsor
A Portrait of Windsor
  • Description
  • Related

Windsor is at once one of the best known and least known of Britainís historic settlements. Its centrepiece is the great Castle, which towers over the town in constant reminder of its past. There has been some kind of fortress here since at least the eleventh century, and Windsor Castle is now the largest inhabited castle in the world, encompassing some 27 acres.

Yet for all of the tourist bustle, a tranquillity prevails outside the centre to a degree surprising for a location only 30 miles from the middle of London. Picturesque corners and attractive buildings give way to the Great Park where, even in summer, a quiet stroll can be had in glorious solitude.

Local man Mark Stenning has captured the unique ambience of the town in 120 stunning images, showing that Windsor is still a rare oasis of charm, elegance and beauty.

Mark Stenning chose photography as a career at a young age, having his own darkroom by the time he was thirteen. After a practical apprenticeship as an assistant to professional photographers, he worked for fashion and beauty photographer John Swanell where he stayed for four years before setting up on his own account in 1991. Although he has a studio in London, most of his work is shot on location around the world. He lives near Windsor with his wife Alison and son Charley.
