Winchester, the county town of Hampshire and once the capital of England, remains
one of the country’s most beautiful and historic cities. Every corner seems to
present a striking image of its past. Here are all the elements that contribute to our sense
of history: a castle, gateways, ruins, winding streets, ancient churches and quiet cloisters
set in a wooded valley with river and meadows. Yet Winchester remains an active
and bustling commercial and business centre, at the leading-edge of twenty-first century
life, seat of local government and public services and a vibrant focus for the arts and
education.
Alan Hayward reveals the full variety of this endlessly fascinating city and its
environs in over 200 superb colour photographs which capture the essence of the place
for residents and visitors alike.

this historic city.
