Accompany Lionel on a typical return journey to the South of France. This is not the headlong dash along motorways made by impatient sun seeking tourists but an alternative circular trip through villages, towns and cities (most of which can be by-passed if you wish), during which gradual, scenic and climatic change is gently absorbed, thus enabling the artist to arrive at his ultimate destination duly primed and ready for action.

Join him on his painting excursions in preparation for exhibitions. The chapter on “French Rivers and Waterways” reveals his interpretations of the Seine, Loire, Canal du Berry, Dordogne and the Lot. Explore Provence throughout the seasons, from the time when occasional snow showers settle briefly amongst the already bursting blossom of the cherry orchards surrounding Bonnieux in the Vaucluse. The riot of spring flowers, followed by the golden splashes of sunflowers and cereals, contrasting with the ribbons of ripe sun-kissed lavender.

Lionel’s paintings portray the character, ambience and bonhomie to be found in the five regions that comprise modern Provence, Vaucluse, Bouches-du-Rhone, Var, Riviera-Alpes Maritimes, and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.
