The wide skies of Norfolk are well known in the art world, and the artists of the Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle have painted them in all their moods. Following on from Crome and Cotman's Norwich Society of Painters, the men and women of the Circle excelled in every medium. The influences of Constable, Turner and Gainsborough are recognised in the work of the Norwich School artists and made their mark on the Victorian painters who formed the Circle in 1885. The Circle became a nurturing force for such painters as Frederick Cotman RI, ROI; Sir Arnesby Brown RA; Sir Alfred Munnings RA; Jeffery Camp RA; Michael Andrews RA; Bernard Meadows; Edward Seago RBA, RWS; and many others.
Over 130 paintings and 80 biographies of such artists, whose reputations travelled far beyond the boundaries of the county of Norfolk, are included in Wide Skies. Contemporary artists, successful at the RA and at the Mall Galleries, include Ian Houston, Gareth Hawker, Martin Laurance, Geoffrey Burrows and Diane Branscombe, among many others whose works are to be found in civic and corporate collections in the UK and internationally.
