As a schoolboy in wartime, evacuated from Acton in Middlesex to Dartmouth, the author of this book, Gerald Wasley, can remember looking at the red glow in the sky as Plymouth burned under the German bombers in the spring of 1941. Plymouth The Shattered City is largely inspired by these memories and provides the only fully illustrated and detailed account of the aerial bombardment of the city by the Luftwaffe in March 1941 and thereafter.
First published in 1991 as Plymouth Blitz, the book is now fully revised and updated, including over 200 new photographs and other images, many of them appearing for the first time.
