Introductory Latin for Kids
Introductory Latin for Kids
  • Description

Introductory Latin for Kids: A Straightforward Course for Young Beginners is a self-study Latin textbook that includes notes on grammar from the cases of nouns to the gerundive vocabulary lists for reference and exercises complete with answers at the back of the book.

Originally undertaken as a personal project by the author a young student herself it eventually blossomed into something more. Aware directly of the challenges many Latin students have to confront, Tatiana Zhang has created this book to help others navigate their ultimately rewarding Latin journeys by guiding them past the obstacles ahead, offering her own signposts to successful translation and splitting complex grammatical features into easily followed steps.

By working through this textbook, the student should develop a solid understanding of the basics of the Latin language and, at the same time, gain insight into Greco-Roman myths and customs. After this, they should be able to embark more confidently on the road to reading more complex Latin texts and reaping the rich rewards that the language offers.

Tatiana Zhang is a high-school student who first picked up Latin in Grade 7 as an extracurricular activity. Inexplicably fascinated by the language and eager to decipher its puzzles, she continued to study it as one of her six subjects in the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme. In Grade 9, she nourished her passion for Classics by taking up Ancient Greek and, in the following years, researched topics of interest to her. As part of the Needham Research Institute program organised by her school, Tatiana published a paper about Western attitudes to Chinese hygiene practices in late Qing China and, the next year, conducted research into ancient comparative philosophy, attempting to find solutions to the philosophical Problem of Evil in the writings of ancient Roman poet Lucretius and ancient Chinese thinker Xunzi. She is now a junior studying at the Independent Schools Foundation Academy in Hong Kong.
