Lying on Devon’s east coast, Budleigh Salterton developed from a place where salt was produced into a fishing village, complete with tales of smuggling. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when its ‘salubrious air’ was thought to be beneficial, it evolved into a watering place. At the height of its popularity the town abounded with hotels and guest-houses but when the day-tripper replaced the holiday-maker these fell into decline.
Even though Budleigh Salterton is a relatively modern parish this book reveals that the community has a heritage worthy of exploration. All this, and much more, is detailed in this 160 page book, copiously illustrated throughout with over 250 historic photographs of the places and people who have made up this thriving community.
