The Book of Princetown (pdf e-book)
The Book of Princetown (pdf e-book)
  • Description

Princetown, the highest town in England, is on the western edge of Dartmoor, a wild and windy place where the grey granite buildings can look cold and forbidding. Many who live in Princetown and the surrounding villages have been there all their lives, at home in a starkly remote area which was made all the more isolated after the railway was demolished in 1956.

Despite its loneliness, however, or perhaps because of it, Princetown abounds in a rich and fascinating history. The prison, the quarries and water channels, the ruins of cottages, the workings of the tin miners and granite workers provide a wealth of stories and artefacts for the follower of history to discover, young and old alike.

Christopher Gardner-Thorpe studied medicine at St Thomas' Hospital and has worked in Exeter since 1974 as a Consultant Neurologist at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. Always a keen walker and lover of Dartmoor, he has special connections with the village of Rundlestone, just north of Princetown.
