The Book of Kingskerswell (pdf e-book)
  • Description

Kingskerswell owes its existence to its geology, being situated on the driest marshland crossing point between St Marychurch to Totnes and Torbay. A royal Saxon manor held by King Edward the Confessor and retained as such by William the Conqueror, the Parish Church was for centuries a chapel of ease of St Marychurch, only gaining parochial independence in 1828.

The oldest settled part of the village centres around Daccabridge, the Parish Church and the ancient manor-house site of the De Moels and Dynham families, with several outlying hamlets, Odicknoll ( a separate ancient manor), North and South Whilborough, Stoneycombe, Brookeader and Huxnor.

Twentieth-century changes have resulted in the loss of the 'Willows' area of the Barton Hall estate to Torquay, and the gain of Aller from Abbotskerswell. The present benefice is united with that of Coffinswell.

All this and more is reviewed in this book expertly by Carsewella, the Kingskerswell Local History Group.
