The Book of Chapel-en-le-Frith (pdf e-book)
The Book of Chapel-en-le-Frith (pdf e-book)
  • Description

Chapel-en-le-Frith was founded almost eight centuries ago, when local foresters built a chapel in the Royal Forest of the Peak (a chapel-en-le-frith). The ancient buildings and monuments in the town and throughout the six hamlets and villages of the parish are rich in post-conquest history and evidence of earlier habitation is to be found in the beautiful surrounding hills.

Although this publication contains extensive pictorial records and written accounts of the changing visual aspects of this fascinating parish, it is primarily a book about the social, educational, religious, cultural and sporting life of a community that was enriched throughout the twentieth century by a host of organisations, clubs and societies.

Life in the twentieth century was sometimes troubled but often joyful. This book is a celebration of times past and present and a tribute to all the people of the Chapel parish.

The parish contains a Neolithic earthwork, a remarkable conglomeration of country houses, one of the earliest tramways in the country, significant reminders of the rise in nonconformism, a factory founded by a great inventor and it was the scene of a particularly gruesome episode in the seventeenth century.
