The story of HM Prison Dartmoor begins over two hundred years ago at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. But it is truly a tale of two prisons for, while its original purpose was to house prisoners of war, it later became a convict prison - perhaps the most notorious the world over.
Volume One 'Parcere Subjectis' relates the awful circumstances which first saw men incarcerate within the forbidding granite walls at Princetown, covers The War Prison 1809 - 1816.
Volume Two 'At Her Majesty's Service' follows the years in which Dartmoor became a convict prison from 1850 to the present day. Each volume is enhanced by hundreds of photographs.
