The Book of Barnstaple Vol 1 (pdf e-book)
The Book of Barnstaple Vol 1 (pdf e-book)
  • Description

Nestling in a valley at the head of the River Taw estuary lies Barnstaple, one of Devon's oldest boroughs. It has a long history of sea trading and commercial enterprise as well as being the agricultural centre of North Devon.

After the arrival of the railway in 1854 the whole area was opened up to the tourist industry and Barnstaple quickly became favoured as a holiday centre boasting the assets of both coast and moorland on its doorstep, and an attractive setting with its wonderful floral displays and ancient cobbled lanes, almshouses, Parish Church and the unique Pannier Market and Butchers Row.

Since the 1950s many changes have taken place in Barnstaple. The Rivers Taw and Yeo no longer play any part in the commercial life of the community and, like every other town in the country, local planners have had to develop Barnstaple to accommodate the motor car. And yet, the borough's community life remains as strong as it has always been; the town today continues to combine its role as North Devon's centre for commerce, education, medical facilities and tourism with its wealth of historical and traditional events and celebrations that have been enjoyed by the townsfolk down through the years. All of which is reflected in this fascinating book containing over 300 historic photographs, maps and illustrations.
