The Book of Ilsington (pdf e-book)
The Book of Ilsington (pdf e-book)
  • Description

The parish of Ilsington, which includes the villages of Liverton, Haytor Vale, South Knighton and Ilsington itself, is one of the largest in Devon. It has been populated for several millennia, parts of Haytor Down and Rippon Tor having been settled during the Stone Age. The lower lands have been gradually cleared over the passing of the centuries and here farming and mining were long the main providers of local employment.

The parish has been witness to the great tide of social change over the last 100 years and today is home to many small entrepreneurs, those in the holiday trade, commuters and the retired. Throughout such change, Ilsington has remained a friendly, welcoming place where newcomers keen to join in are readily accepted into the lively local community.

This book traces the history of the parish from its earliest times, but essentially celebrates the last century of the Ilsington story. Through the inclusion of over 300 photographs, supplemented by detailed captions and a lively text, this superb book will be a precious heirloom for anyone living in the parish, or for those who have family associations with it.

At the beginning of a new millennium our past as well as our future is drawn more sharply into focus. It is important to be reminded of the people and events that have made our communities what they are today to celebrate the past in order to provide a stepping stone to the future.

The photographs in this book are a vital record of Islington's history, brought together in a single volume.
