The Book of North Newton (pdf e-book)
The Book of North Newton (pdf e-book)
  • Description

The parish of North Newton lies south of North Petherton, in the heart of Somerset between the county town of Taunton and the industrial town of Bridgwater.

The surrounding area has been settled since prehistoric times and boasts a rich history. In Saxon days, Alfred the Great is reputed to have burnt the cakes near his court at Newton, and Geoffrey Chaucer was a forester in the royal forest of Petherton Park, which later became the manor house of the village.

The authors trace these important historical links right through to the twentieth century and look at how the parish has changed and developed under the influence of the surrounding landscape, the trials and tribulations of the wealthier landowners and, in particular, with the technological advancements of the last hundred years.

The lives of the parishioners have altered dramatically, some having moved away to be replaced by 'newcomers' wishing to make North Newton their home, others having remained here all their lives.

This book draws freely on that community: memories have been searched, archives and maps consulted, and old, treasured photographs lent to the authors, many of which have never been published before. The result is a unique record celebrating the changing face of daily life in North Newton in the family home and at work, and in times of hardship and prosperity.
